French MP Bernard Lesterlin in Vanuatu [fr]
Mr. Bernard Lesterlin, Member of Parliament for Allier Department and former chairman of the France – Vanuatu friendship group at the National Assembly, has visited Vanuatu from 27 to 30 March.
The MP began his visit with a meeting with representatives of the French community who shared with him their experience of TC Pam. He then paid a visit to the Speaker, Hon. Philip Boedoro, to whom he delivered a letter from the French Speaker, Mr. Claude Bartolone. He also delivered the text of a motion of support issued by the Parliamentary Assembly of Francophonie after Tropical Cyclone Pam devastated Vanuatu. He also paid a curtesy visit to the President of the Republic, HE Baldwin Lonsdale.
The MP flew to Tanna onboard a Gardian plane from the FANC (Armed Forces of New Caledonia) and met with the fifty soldiers stationed at the airport. President Lonsdale was also present. A Puma helicopter flight over the island showed the extent of damages caused by the cyclone.
The MP clearly saw during a tour around Efate Island, where the capital city Port Vila is located, the scale of destructions on houses and crops. He also visited the Vanuatu Red Cross facilities in Port Vila.
