Operation Flying Book in Vanuatu [fr]
To cater to needs expressed by the Ministry of Education and local communities in outlying islands, the French Embassy brought in a container full of 30,000 second-hand books collected by the French association Le Bouquin Volant (Flying Book).
Books intended for leisure (storybooks, awareness books, youth and adult novels...) as well as dictionaries, encyclopedias and academic works, are given out to Francophone schools and institutions of Shefa and Malampa provinces by Vanuatu Ministry of Education. Some Higher education institutions as IFEV, USP, AUF, and the public library in Port Vila will also receive books. Nearly 80 educational institutions are therefore benefitting from this micro-project.
The Ambassador of France, Mr. Michel Djokovic officially handed over the books to the minister of education, Mr. Bob Loughman on Monday, April 7th 2014. This initiative was also made easier thanks to Father Rodet, who kindly made his warehouse available, and to Vanuatu Scouts and other volunteers who sorted, packaged and distributed the books.
The French Embassy hopes to repeat such an operation to benefit the four other provinces of Vanuatu.
